Titus sings "Ebony and Ivory" for
500 Songs for Kids' Countdown Concert.
Here is what The Atlanta Journal Constitution
had to say about it!
500 Songs for Kids finishes third year
Josh Rifkind (left), Atlanta’s version of Bob Geldof, for the third year in a row, pulled off a logistical triple axel by gathering 500 different acts to sing 500 different songs at Smith’s Olde Bar over 10 days for his charity group 500 Songs for Kids Foundation.
That’s basically a 70-hour concert over 10 days. And Rifkind emcees the entire thing with an indefatigable spirit.
This year, he and his colleagues chose the 500 most passionate songs of all time, ranging from “War” by Edwin Starr (no. 486) to “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix (No. 330) to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” (No. 1).
“This was the best year ever,” said Rifkind, who is also the manager of local band The Whigs. “The overall enthusiasm was up. The place was packed every night.” He even powered his way through a nasty virus partway into the 10 days.
Rifkind’s charity raises money to bring musicians to hospitals and camps to sing to sick children. Last year, he said more than 100 musicians took part and he expects even more this year.
This year’s bigger names who showed up to the fundraiser included Angie Aparo, members of Drive-By Truckers, Shawn Mullins, Gavin DeGraw and Arrested Development.
“It’s a ridiculously crazy undertaking,” said bassist Wes Hoffman, part of the Constellations, which sang No. 474 “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode. “You need a maniac to pull it off. And that’s Josh.”
Rifkind said Monday that he slept 15 hours Sunday night after it was over, the most he has in years. He and three of his friends plan for four months to gather the 500 different acts. (If an act fails to show up, existing musicians will gather the lyrics and fake their way through songs.)
As usual, Rifkind isn’t sure he’ll do it again. But he said that the past two years, too.
